To ensure a positive and safe experience when your dog embarks on their first solo adventure with a borrower, it's important to ensure you are all ready for this next step.
The relationship between a dog and a borrower is unique, and ensuring they are fully prepared can lead to enjoyable experiences for everyone.
Every dog is different, some dogs will happily accompany anybody on a walk and remain relaxed and obedient. Others may need to get to know their new friend for a longer period before it is safe (and fun) for them to go on a solo outing.
We’ve put together this checklist to help you assess when your dog and borrower are ready. There is no right or wrong, but it is important to tick these key boxes before your borrower and dog go off on their first adventure together:
Mutual comfort and recognition
Your dog recognises and greets the borrower upon meeting, and both your dog and the borrower are happy and relaxed around each other.
Control and confidence
You feel calm and confident in the borrower's ability to handle your dog during outings together.
Obedience and respect
Your dog is responsive to and respectful of the borrower’s commands. This is key to ensuring the borrower can effectively manage your pooch in various situations.
Experience and exposure
Before solo outings, it's a good idea for your dog and the borrower to navigate a range of experiences together. These can include interacting with other dogs, exploring different environments like parks or urban areas, and possibly using public transport, assuming it's part of your dog's routine and you consent to it.
A mutual understanding
Both you and the borrower should have a clear and mutual understanding of your dog's care requirements and what is appropriate for your pooch.
Preparation
The borrower should have access to your Doggy Info Sheet, understand the necessary steps for seeking veterinary care if needed, and have your contact information readily available for any emergencies or questions.
Enjoyment
The final sign that you’re all ready for this next step is that everyone is getting on really well and enjoying the process. A positive relationship between your dog and the borrower is key to paving the way for successful solo outings. This means your dog’s happy, your borrower’s happy and you’re happy!
